Forever 21 earrings, good or bad?
[2010-04-23 19:22:32]
Liz & Penny

I'll be getting my ears pierced soon, and was wondering if forever 21 earrings are good to wear.
Like, it won't effect my ears or anything. I know, it sounds stupid but my mom thinks it's better for me to wear 14 kt or something! But there earrings

Do not wear fake earrings too soon. Wear your 14k or higher when you pierce them and months after. She is right the cheap ones can damage your ears if you put them in soon after you get it pierced. I did the same thing when I got my first piercing and

Get the right hattitude for spring fashion

She has been in touch with many of the “Real Housewives” — the ladies of Atlanta, Orange County, New York, New Jersey and Beverly Hills.

And she has pictures of other B-listers — the girls from “Jerseylicious” reality show and “How Do I Look?” host Jeanne Mai — wearing her hats.

Some might even be wearing them Saturday at the Kentucky Derby, where the hats are as important as the horses.

Nicole Ross-Barton of the Northland makes and sells fancy hats with her mother at designsbycole.com. When she started marketing them, she knew just who should get them. After all, it takes a certain star quality — call it “hattitude” — for a woman to pull off a hat.

Beyonce, for instance, pairs fedoras with oversized earrings — and bodyguards. Angelina Jolie oozes glamour on the beach wearing wide-brimmed hats and movie-star sunglasses.

New mommy Jessica Simpson is a walking billboard for her own line of hats — Panamas, fedoras, cloches, cowboy hats, she wears them all. (Baby bonnets coming?)

Last month, Christina Aguilera blew up fashion blogs when she wore a black, sequined, CD-shaped thing perched on her head on an episode of “The Voice.” We loved it. We hated it.

When real people wear hats, the response is usually more positive. And that’s another thing about hattitude: You have to like being the center of attention.

“Once you wear a hat to church, to an event, you get hooked on that attention immediately,” says Detroit hat designer Luke Song. “It’s a good attention. Every guy that passes you, every woman who passes you is going to compliment you, or nod their head at you. All of a sudden, everyone is a friend of yours.”

Song is the man who made one of the most memorable celebrity chapeaux in recent memory, the gray wool, bow-shaped extravaganza Aretha Franklin wore at the presidential inauguration in 2009. That hat is now bound for the Smithsonian Institution to live among other iconic Americana. (Franklin, by the way, plays a sold-out show at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday.)

Every so often hats grab the style spotlight, as they did a year ago when women all over the world donned fancy hats to watch the British royal wedding on TV.

Thanks to all the media mentions of millinery, we now know what a fascinator is: a fancy headpiece clipped into the hair, sort of a hat alternative. The most head-scratching fascinator at the wedding rode on top of Princess Beatrice’s head, a curlicued Disney-esque creation by famous hatmaker Philip Treacy.

But even before the wedding, hats were coming back, Song says. He theorizes that fashionistas cutting back on buying clothes in these tough times are buying hats: Changing up the look of an outfit is a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

That’s exactly how stay-at-home mom Nicole Ross-Barton got into the hat-making business. Her cousin got married in February 2011, and she needed something to wear to the wedding.

With a newborn at home, she didn’t want to spend money on clothes and didn’t have time to shop. So she bought a fancy headband to accessorize something she already owned.

“After the wedding I thought, ‘You know, for what I paid for this, I could have done it myself,’ ” she says.

She enlisted help from her mom, Kathy Ross, who sews, and the two started designing and making hats in a spare bedroom in Ross’ Lee’s Summit home.

They knew they were onto something when women couldn’t keep their hands off the hats at a holiday mart last fall. They sold even more at a nursing convention in Overland Park, where the women went positively Gaga over the hats.

So they set up a website, and Ross-Barton started sending samples to hat-wearing celebrities, quite a few as it turned out. (Bethenny Frankel, one of the original “Real Housewives of New York City,” really rocks a hat, she says.)

Hats “took a hiatus for a while,” Song says. “In the last several years I think our demographic has shifted to a younger generation. I think women are just tired of being boring, wearing fashion that’s pretty common.”

Hats definitely make a big fashion statement, says Kansas City fashion stylist Molly Bingaman, owner of Ladybird Styling.

“I think the biggest thing is they have to be cohesive with the rest of your look,” she says. “You can’t just grab a hat and throw it on with what you’re wearing. It really needs to be a supporting element, just like any other accessory.

“You have to think about the whole picture, the head-to-toe look that you’re going for.”

Bingaman says two hat styles are in vogue now: the slouchy, wide-brimmed hat and the fedora, which Song calls “one of those go-to hats.”

The slouchy hat creates that ’70s bohemian look when worn with long skirts and maxi dresses, Bingaman says. Your celebrity reference points: Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe.

The fedora is just as universally flattering and plays nicely with just about anything in your closet, from dresses to jeans. “That one is really easy, flattering on most because they’re not super-big,” Bingaman says.

Rihanna rocks the fedora thus: fashionably cockeyed, slightly tilted to one side.

For special events like weddings and evening affairs, headgear should be more glamorous.

This is where “I would direct them to the fascinators, something more close to the head,” Song says.

“If you’re going to the theater, you don’t want to wear something so grand that it obstructs the view of the people behind you. But I would do little puffs of feathers, little flowers, rhinestones … a lot of beading. Just for a little sparkle at night.”

Day, night. Any time is a good time for Dana Hill to don a hat. The Kansas City graphic designer is the keeper of a style blog named after her pinup persona, Louiselemans.com.

Hill is loaded with hattitude.

Running errands on the weekend, she’s usually in a hat. One favorite is a wide-brimmed striped number made of turquoise paper that is quite fetching against her flame-colored hair.

“I have no trouble walking into a place wearing my wide-brimmed hat,” says Hill, even though “getting in and out of the car can be an issue.”

She has been wearing and collecting vintage hats and headpieces since fourth grade, when she wore a Madeline-style chapeau — turned-up brim, bow in the back — to school on storybook character day.

Now people give her hats, and she scoops up more at favorite stores like Retro Vixen and Rock Candy Boutique on 39th Street and online at asos.com.

“Especially if you’re new to hats, go to Target, go to Forever 21,” Hill says. “You can spend $15, $20 on a hat that will get heads turning, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money.”

Most women don’t even know they have hattitude until they put a hat on their head.

“The first thing someone says is, ‘Oh, I can’t wear hats,’ ” Ross-Barton says. “But then they start trying them on and suddenly they’re a hat person.”

Hat tricks

How to find a flattering hat? Keep this trifecta in mind:

• Proportion: “It has to be flattering to your frame,” says Kansas City stylist Molly Bingaman. “A big Derby hat, for instance, is going to swallow your frame if you’re small.”

• Purpose: Where are you going to wear the hat? For everyday, look for a casual style like a straw fedora; stay away from anything shiny or overly embellished. For evening, choose a fancy fascinator, also known as a cocktail hat.

• Fit: Try on several styles. For an everyday look, comfort is key. The hat should be a little loose on the head, but not so much that it covers your forehead.

Derbylicious fashion

The theme of this year’s West 18th Street Fashion Show is “Triple Crown Summer,” and the audience is encouraged to wear Kentucky Derby-style hats.

The show begins at dusk June 9 in the Crossroads Arts District on West 18th Street between Baltimore and Wyandotte.

The event is free (standing-room), but a limited number of ticketed seats close to the runway are available online or at Birdies, 116 W. 18th St.

For more information, go to westeighteenth

street.com.

Kansas City Derby Fest

What: A fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association hosted by Maker’s Mark.
