Restaurant review: Hawker Bar

Singapore: The city state in which you can eat better at a food court than, many gourmands say, in any of the internationally promoted star-chef restaurants. You may cry when you consider the Night of the Living Dead aura in Toronto’s mass feeding stations, but tonight, I have a Singapore-savvy guide who endures the midday sun to explore the food courts that pepper the city. They’re so cheap that they defy the maxim that you get what you pay for. Singaporeans follow food the way the English follow soccer — fanatically. You have to be nippy to snag a seat at the picturesque Beer Garden or the vast Newton Circus where you trustingly order katong laksa, Singapore’s version of the fiery curry soup that is a staple of the kitchens all across Southeast Asia and which can melt down novices.

Tiny Tallulah on Thames is terrific experience
Soon Cara brought wonderfully crunchy-on-the- outside, puffy-and-warm-on-the-inside rolls and a small rectangle of butter that had been brightened with micro-greens -- basil, parsley and amaranth, a red-petaled Chinese herb that you won't find at Stop

Protecting trees from weather extremes
Stay away from trees that are weak-wooded, that break easily and drop branches, including the ubiquitous silver maple, Siberian and Chinese elms, and some willows. Any tree with narrow, Vshaped branch crotches (where cracks develop) is a poor bet.
