Most high school students study Spanish or French to fulfill their foreign language requirements for graduation, but for approximately 100 Gig Harbor-area students, Chinese is their language choice.
And some of them have become very proficient at it.
Earlier this year, students from both Peninsula and Gig Harbor high schools brought home multiple honors from a competitive event in Seattle called the Chinese Language and Talent Competition.
“Students from all over the Puget Sound area compete in the event each year,” said Heidi Steele, Peninsula School District’s Chinese language teacher. “Usually there are about 400 students who take part. They compete in poetry recitation, art, story telling, public speaking and other categories — most all of them in Chinese. It’s very competitive.”
