Jeannette Rankin Peace Center honors Vietnam veteran's outreach efforts

Dan Gallagher’s job during the Vietnam War was to use demolition to plant and dig out mines. It was a job that was anything but peaceful.

Gallagher had, like many other men, chosen to serve his country to fight in Vietnam, leaving his hometown of Charlo in 1966 to serve in the U.S. Army just as the war Southeast Asia became “our country’s war.”

A 23-day boat ride took Gallagher and his unit into the shores of Vietnam. They then served in the country’s central highlands, where Gallagher saw his friends and civilians die in grenade explosions as he himself set up mines as a combat engineer.
