Why is it called Mexican Hat, Utah, and not Sombrero, Utah?

A: Because at the time, the name sombrero was not a commonly used, or known word. It is also possible that at the time it was named, there was another style of Mexican hat that was popular, and the source of the name Mexican Hat.

At Gooseneck State Park there is a scenic outlook where many old westerns were filmed. It is near Mexican Hat, Utah. In one John Wayne film, he throws a pint bottle of whiskey into the river from the outlook point. Name the movie.


"The Searchers" is my latest guess, but I still don't trust my memory. I haven't seen many of these films for quite awhile.

I see that "Fort Apache" did some filming there, but I can't picture that scene in this film,

TUSD Federal Investigation Press Conference Tonight (Tuesday) at 5:15 pm

At a 5:15 p.m. press conference tonight, the Glendale-based Civil Rights Center will discuss complaints that led the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights in Denver to open two investigations into alleged civil rights abuses by the Tucson Unified School District.

The press conference takes place in front of the TUSD administration building, 1010 E. 10th St. Hat tip to DA Morales, who broke this story on Three Sonorans.

In a recent interview I did with Civil Rights Center executive director Silverio Garcia Jr., he said he filed a complaint against the district on Jan. 17, 2012, and then e-mailed the office in March with additional concerns. I am planning a road trip in the US. Does any one know Cottonwood Canyon Road (Utah)?

According to Michelin's website, it takes more than four hours for approx 45 miles on that road . Are the scenari worth it ? Is this road hazardous ? Any recommandation ?

The scenery is apparently very worth it. It is an unpaved but graded road. Hazardous in bad weather. Not recommended to drive if threatening rain or raining.
