Danville, VA - The City of Danville played an incredibly important role in the Civil War. It served as the last capital of the Confederacy and was one of the few southern cities with access to a rail line. But something you may not know is the city's history that's worth digging for.
Danville's thriving tobacco industry made it one of the wealthiest cities in the confederacy and its population was the largest between Richmond and Atlanta.
"It also had a rather remote location. Down here right on the North Carolina border, it was protected from a lot of the front lines. It became sort of a natural selection for a place to serve the confederacy," said Sarah Latham, Chair of Danville's Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee.
