Last night during NPRās āAll Things Considered,ā there came this note ā āsponsored by āThe Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,ā the new comedy from Fox Searchlight Pictures, appearing in selected theaters.ā
These spots have been running for a couple of weeks. As San Antonio movie buffs are painfully aware, none of those āselected theatersā is anywhere near them.
That will finally change Friday, when āMarigoldā opens at the Santikos Bijou.
Starring a whoās who of great British actors (Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy)Ā bound for what they think is a luxurious retirement hotel in India run by Dev Patel (“Slumdog Millionaire”), āMarigoldā obviously aspires to be this summerās art-house hit. The director is John Madden (the āShakespeare in Loveā guy, not the colorful NFL analyst); the studio, Fox Searchlight, has given us the likes of āLittle Miss Sunshine,ā āBlack Swan,ā āOnceā and ā500 Days of Summer.ā
