Defence Minister Peter MacKay's inability to understand the value of a dollar has once again reared its ugly head , as documents from the Department of National Defence show that Canada's involvement in the Libya NATO mission cost about seven times what he told Parliament. The documents, as reported by Postmedia News' Lee Berthiaume, conclude that the Libya mission, which stretched from March of last year to October when Moammar Gadhafi was killed, cost Canadian taxpayers about $350 million. MacKay had told Parliament after Gadhafi's death that the cost was "somewhere under $50 million." Even if one uses the DND habit of publishing only "incremental costs," or costs on top of standard operating expenses (namely, salaries, fuel, food, etc.), then the tab still hits $100 million – twice what MacKay said the cost would be. Now, unless the curiously extravagant victory celebration held on Parliament Hill cost around $300 million, then MacKay's got some splainin' to do. (Ask yourself – is being a part of the mission that indirectly led to the death of Gadhafi worth $100 million? Seriously. Take some time to think it over.)
